Zum Services, Inc. (Zum) is a Redwood City, California company that modernizes K-12 student transportation by combining a software platform with managed school bus operations. Its Connected Mobility Experience platform handles route optimization, dispatch, driver and fleet management, student boarding and real-time parent notifications on one system. Zum says it serves more than 5,000 schools and districts and completed 68 million rides in 2025, including Los Angeles Unified, San Francisco Unified and Boston Public Schools. In January 2024 it raised a $140M Series E led by GIC at a reported $1.3B valuation.
What sets it apart
Zum owns both sides of the problem - the routing and tracking software and the fleet that runs on it - which lets it claim 98% on-time performance with up to 20% shorter route times and 25% fewer buses. It also launched the first fully electrified school bus fleet in the US (74 buses in Oakland, CA) with vehicle-to-grid capability that sends energy back to the grid.
