Lakril Technologies (Låkril) is a Chicago-based specialty chemicals startup commercializing bio-based acrylic acid made from renewable sugars instead of petroleum. Its patent-pending thermochemical catalyst converts lactic acid into acrylic acid in a single-step dehydration reaction, using feedstocks such as corn, cane and sugar beet that can plug into existing fermentation infrastructure. The company sells acrylics and licenses its catalyst and process technology to the acrylics value chain. It has completed front-end engineering for a production facility in the 40,000-50,000 metric ton per year range.
